Cut To Creative
'Cut To Creative' is the evil brain child of screenwriters Richard Crawford and Spence Wright. In the coming weeks we will be bringing you details of our exciting 'Fast Track to development workshop' which gives screenwriters an intensive one day feature film workshop AND a unique opportunity to get their script into development with a major UK film Production Company.

This list is an inflation-adjusted version of the all-time box-office earners. Apart from being more representative of popularity, it might illustrate your point even better than the standard one. It's certainly got more variety. (Look where the 'The Graduate' is!)

I've found the following sites very useful:

www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom - contains free downloadable script software, an excellent downloadable style guide (for those of you using Microsoft Word or another form of word processing software), readable screenplays and lots of interesting advice.

www.imdb.com - Although edited by the general public (and therefore prone to more than one error) this is particularly useful for the 'memorable quotes' section which often picks out the most interesting dialogue in films and t.v. shows.

www.variety.com - generally referred to as the Film Industry's bible, there's a massive film review section which offers often excellent (and occasionally bewildering) criticism of cinema both populist and esoteric. Particularly useful in covering the Cannes and Sundance film festivals, where a low budget Irish film titled 'Once' was picked up. It's now doing phenomenal business in limited release in the U.S.

But how do you manage to post such long comments, Peter? That's the advice I need right now. Go on, tell me your secret. You know you want to.

There's no apparent limit on what I can type. I take it your computer isn't letting you go beyond the initial box.

      So, no secret? Damn.

The posting previews perfectly. It just doesn't post all of it, just six or seven lines. I know 'less is more' and all that, but sometimes I feel I've got more to give, not less.

I have of course written to my MP about this matter.

Here's a link to an interview with Paul Schrader, primarily about the writing of Bringing Out The Dead, but moving onto working practices. Very interesting.
